Friday digest: All set for the PLN awards 2012

18-May-12 15:49

It’s been all go at PLN this week as we gear up for the biggest event in the procurement calendar, which will see procurement chiefs flying into London from around the world to attend the Procurement Leaders Awards and Forum.

The Awards are being held in central London on Monday night and will see the world’s biggest companies battle it out to be named winner in one of the 12 awards up for grabs.

The day after, the forum will investigate the ways in which procurement can contribute value through both traditional and more advanced techniques.

Speakers at the Forum include Remko Van Hoek, PwC, Eva Wimmers, Deutsche Telekom and Marc Marini, AIG and topics covered will include how procurement can influence shareholder value, developing greater synergies between procurement and the wider business as well as fine tuning your procurement organisation.

On the news front there was plenty to talk in a week which culminated in Facebook’s huge public offering.

News – Potato procurement fraud scam cost Sainsbury’s millions

The finance director of one of Sainsbury’s key suppliers was convicted of bribing a buyer which ended up costing the supermarket millions in over-payments.

News – Automotive giants’ sourcing linked to deforestation

A new report from Greenpeace has linked some of the world’s biggest car makers, including GM, BMW and Ford to deforestation and slave labour practices in Brazil.

The environmental group used customs data to link the auto giants to Brazilian companies with links to these practices.

Blog – Is partnering with suppliers overhyped?

Dr Joanne Meehan, lecturer at the University of Liverpool and author of Sustainable Procurement Practice looked into the issue of whether an integrated relationship between buyers and suppliers lives up to all the hype. She cites some recent research that suggests that current thinking on partnerships may have some flaws.

Finally, good luck to those shortlisted for an award and we hope to see you all there.
