The Assessment of Excellence in Procurement (AEP) 2008 – How to turn survey findings into lasting benefits

Wolfgang Steck, VP, Procurement Solutions, A.T. Kearney
Daniel Cameron , Director Performance & Transformation - Group Procurement, Royal Mail Group

The Assessment of Excellence in Procurement 2008 has once again set the benchmarks for procurement functions worldwide.

With almost 500 companies around the globe participating to date, the survey has produced important findings into best practices and processes, what distinguishes leaders from followers. However, beyond receiving a company specific report, it is the companies who take the survey findings, translate them into their specific environment and thus turn them into lasting results, who are benefitting the most from the AEP 2008.

Presenting jointly along with a selected participating company, Wolfgang Steck will explore examples of such success stories:

  • How to build a sustainable improvement plan from the survey results?
  • How to address particular challenges and gaps?
  • How to use the results to maintain leadership positions?
  • How to take advantage of the framework for Benefits Tracking, for incentivising the organisation etc.?

India - a better version of China?

Facilitator:
Ashish Kumar
, Director, BrainNet EAC Office Mumbai

When it comes to global sourcing India is still not first choice for many companies and loses out to China or Eastern European countries. But as the world’s biggest democracy with Anglo American law and business approach India retains advantages (i.e. language and administrative advantages) over other global sourcing destinations and is stronger in certain sourcing categories (i.e. software, outsourcing of services) than other countries.

This roundtable discussion will focus on India as a sourcing market and will discuss the following issues:

  • What are the opportunities and threats of sourcing from India? Can India become the central sourcing hub in the future?
  • What is the right strategy for sourcing from India?
  • How does the Indian sourcing market differ from the Chinese sourcing market?

Sustainability in the supply chain: Impact on the procurement decision
Paul McNeillis, ICT & CSR Director, Achilles Group
Arnie Bawden, Supply Chain Corporate Responsibility Manager, O2 Telefonica Europe
Peter Kvisgaard, Director of Procurement, Skanska
Kayzi Ambridge, Responsible Procurement Manager, E.ON UK

Sustainable procurement is undoubtedly a strategic business activity for today’s successful businesses. But any sustainability has to make sound business sense. If it was merely a good thing to do, then it runs the risk of being marginalised if cutbacks need to be made. There is now recognition that poor stewardship of the environment not only has the potential to damage corporate reputations and brands but can also have a negative impact on the companies’ bottom line.

Please join this roundtable for a rich and topical discussion and debate surrounding the diverse range of issues that fall under the CSR umbrella

Collaborative KPIs: Aligning buyer-supplier performance incentives in service critical end-customer-facing processes
Professor Henk Akkermans, Tilburg University (developed in collaboration with Willem Van Oppen, KPN Royal Dutch Telecom)

In the past decades we have seen in industrialized economies a shift from “manufacturing” to “services”. Even in the old industry of manufacturing we see a very strong tendency to sell the physical good wrapped in a service package, hence the term “Servitization”. The quality of the services delivered in this game is the differentiator. In short our ability to “deliver against promise”, whereby it is essential to acknowledge that “promise” is what the customer experiences or perceives and not the service provider’s connotation of what the “promise” holds. Collaboration with the supply base is essential if one believes that upstream Supply Base partners can contribute to end-customer “perceived” value being realized. Professor Henk Akkermans , co-creator of the of the concept of Collaborative KPIs will elaborate:

  • How to constitute such collaboration with the supply base
  • How to have the supply base contribute to end–customer value
  • How to keep this contribution measurable
  • How to reward the contributors to that end customer value, based on his “Collaborative KPI concept, which was awarded the R. Gene Richter Award for Leadership and Process Innovation at the Institute for Supply Management 2008 Conference in St. Louis.

Called to the Front: Driving Procurement Success by Leveraging the Economic Downturn
Jesper Schade, Vice President, Efficio
Luisella Chiesa, Vice President, Efficio

The current economic downturn is a natural trigger for companies to increase their focus on procurement. In recent years, procurement has seen its prominence rise on the boardroom agenda and as times become harder, this focus is only set to increase. There is a danger that short-term cost-cutting approaches may prevail over longer-term value building but nonetheless, the downward cycle presents an excellent opportunity for procurement to undergo a step change in sophistication and for procurement departments to play a critical role in navigating their companies through the difficult times. However, now more than ever, a sense of urgency is paramount.

In this presentation Efficio will explore the latest findings of a global survey that was conducted in partnership with Procurement Leaders Network and offers key insights for procurement executives on how to grasp the opportunities at hand.

  • What is the likely impact of a global downturn on your business?
  • Are procurement functions still "sorting out the basics"?
  • What are the key action points to be able to rise to the challenge?
