Brewer hits waste target five years early
MillerCoors has achieved its 2015 waste reduction goals five years early. In its 2010 sustainable development report, the US brewer has eliminated 20% of waste sent to landfill and brought waste to landfill at plants in Tenton, Ohio and Elkton, Virginia down to nothing.
The report, titled Great beer, great responsibility, also noted that total energy consumption had been lowered by 3.6% per barrel of beer across its eight major breweries and greenhouse gas emissions reduced by 1.2% across all operations and facilities. Overall, the company reuses or recycles nearly all brewery waste.
However, the brewer fell short of water reduction targets, partly due to a shift in the location of production as part of a joint venture. MillerCoors has said it plans to complete a water footprint in 2011, evaluating its water use throughout the entire supply chain to better understand its overall direct and indirect water use.
