EU vows to clamp down on illegally sourced timber
The plans centres on a new law, which has recently been ratified by the European Parliament, compelling timber companies to undertake due diligence measures that ensure that their timber products are legally sourced.
It is estimated that some 20 % of timber sold in the EU may have originated from illegal logging operations.
"It is a breakthrough," Satu Hassi, a Finnish member who steered the law through the EU assembly today n Strasbourg, France, told Bloomberg.
"Tackling illegal logging is very important for climate protection." Final EU approval of the legislation, which also prohibits the sale of timber logged illegally under the rules of the country of origin, is a formality in coming months because the bloc's national governments have pledged their backing.
The law, which is due to come into force in approximately two years, means that companies which first sell timber in the EU are obliged to prove that it is sourced legally. The legislation also requires European businesses elsewhere in the supply chain to keep records that, as a whole, would allow timber to be traced back to the importing company or to the forest owner, according to Bloomberg.
