US Government lags in promoting corporate responsibility

The US government has been urged to better use its $535bn budget to improve corporate responsibility.

The call came from the Corporate Responsibility Officers Association (CROA), which argues that Washington is not doing enough to promote sustainability and transparency across its supply chain.

"The US government trails many other nations and even the commercial sector in using its purchasing power to promote its transparency and sustainability objectives. Our research to date reveals no real correlation between government purchasing and the transparency of its suppliers," said Richard Crespin, executive director of the CROA.

Recently, General Services Administration administrator Martha Johnson made the "bold declaration" of moving GSA to zero environmental footprint. But she has committed to doing so collaboratively and transparently. "We need industry to engage with us in collaboration that results in convergent thinking - bringing real solutions to real problems that will cause positive outcomes."
