Sustainability takes a knock as Europe falls behind in green procurement
A lack of coherent green procurement strategies is threatening to hold back sustainability drives across Europe, with the continent's largest economy emerging as one of the worst offenders.A new study by supply chain management consultancy BrainNet, found that less than a third of German firms were actively engaged in "green procuretment", as sceptical procurement organisations in the country continue to question the ecological and economic benefits it can bring.
Although the 30 per cent figure found in Germany was dwarfed by the 46 per cent recorded elsewhere in Europe, the study found that very few companies had developed an individual green procurement strategy, with almost three-quarters (72 per cent) preferring to adopt a project-based approach.
The report also revealed that just 23 per cent of companies involved in the study had appointed a green procurement officer - a figure that fell to 18 per cent in Germany.
"More than half of all processes between businesses and their social, ecological and economic environment are related to procurement," said Simon Luibl, survey coordinator and practice head of green procurement at BrainNet.
"Therefore it is only consistent if a strong environmental orientation is already in place in procurement.
"Environmental orientation is no longer the hobbyhorse of idealists, but instead offers concrete economic advantages in the medium term and increases the value of the company."
