Green transport procurement plans unveiled by EU
Public sector bodies across Europe may soon be forced to comply with procurement legislation governing the environmental impact of any vehicle purchases they plan to make.
The news comes following a vote by the European Parliament's Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, which rubber-stamped the plans.
A spokeswomen for the committee said that the new legislation, which is expected to come into force by 2010, would effectively attach a monetary value to a vehicles emissions - a value that would have to be taken into account by procurement organisations across Europe.
The committee claimed that the plans would result in a "substantial" increase in demand for energy efficient vehicles.
According to estimates, the current total annual vehicle procurement for public authorities across the EU is 110,000 passenger cars, 110,000 light commercial vehicles, 35,000 lorries and 17,000 buses.
