Politicians showing lack of leadership as food price crisis continues
Food prices could stay high for the next two decades, one of the world’s leading sourcing figures has warned.
Hans Johr, food sourcing chief at Nestle, told the Financial Times that food prices were likely to drop from their current peaks but could remain far above previous levels due to a lack of political leadership.
Mr Johr said that rising prices had “put food security on the table everywhere”, but argued that no political leader was taking the necessary steps to stop the current crisis.
“It’s on the political agenda but only to a certain degree, hidden by this philosophical approach talking about climate change,” he said.
“Instead of talking really about food security and taking measures, we’re talking about climate change and how it will impact this and that. But if you do not have the will and the commitment of political leaders to take entire nations into one direction, then it’s very difficult [to find a lasting solution].”
