Discount fashion retailer cuts losses after child labour claim

Fashion chain Primark has stopped buying from three suppliers after it discovered that they had used child labour to embroider clothes sold in their stores.

The move follows a tip-off from the BBC’s Panorama programme that its child labour practices were being contravened by some of their suppliers in India.

The three factories, one of which had supplied the company for 12 years, were found to have subcontracted work to home workers who had employed children.

Primark told its other suppliers that it “would not tolerate this kind of sub-contracting”, and said that planned to appoint a “reputable non-governmental organisation in southern India to act as its eyes and ears on the ground.”

Despite its decision, Primark has been criticised by Labour Behind the Label, a pressure group which aims to improve the working conditions in the clothing industry.

Spokesman Martin Hearson said: "This reaction from Primark smacks of old school reputation management and falls far short of the response we would expect to see from a company that claims to be committed to ethical trading.

"Cutting and running from suppliers following exposure by campaigners or the media only serves to punish those workers brave enough to speak out about their conditions. Such actions make Primark's ethical claims ring hollow."
