Toyota suppliers feel the pinch after cut backs

Toyota has announced plans to slash jobs at one of its major US plants, placing the future of some of its suppliers in doubt.

The company said it was cutting jobs at the Texas Tundra plant as part of a scaling back of its truck building operations. And those suppliers that rely on Toyota’s success could be left paying the price.

Speaking after the announcement – which will see 200 temporary workers lose their jobs – Michael De La Garza of Toyota, said that the company’s suppliers were “aware of the situation.”

"They've been apprised of the situation, and I think the reaction has been one of understanding that this is the auto industry," he said.

Berto Guerra of Avanzar, one of Toyota’s main suppliers, said: “I think there will be a trickle down effect. These are tough times. Gas prices are up, production is down.”
