Business leaders need to “rethink” approach to talent

Companies need a leadership “rethink” in order to recruit and retain the talent they need – that’s the view of David Thompson, director of talent management at investment bank ABN Amro.

Speaking to the Sunday Times, Thompson said that the demands placed on business leaders had changed considerably in recent years.

“Previously, being a leader has been about setting goals for the team and, more often than not, teams do need a leader,” he said.

“But the Generation Y-ers – those born after 1980 – are demanding different things from their leaders.”

Thompson pointed to the need for employees to be given the “space” they need to innovate.

He said: “In recent times, the practice has been making people fit into a particular mould and act in a certain way.

“That notion is falling away and you actually get more out of people if you give them license to be themselves.”
