New port provides gateway for European logistics
The £1.5bn deal is due to be signed this week, and the owner, Dubai Ports (DP) World, believe the new facility will revolutionise the way goods are transported into, and around, the UK.
The London Gateway container port and business park will be built on the site of the former Shell oil refinery site at Shell Haven.
Simon Moore, manager of the London Gateway project, told the BBC: "The physical platform that we are creating is for the 21st Century and this is the first deep water port to be built in the UK in the 21st Century."
Moore said that the new super port would be equipped with the technology needed to handle modern shipping volumes and claimed that the London Gateway facility would have a positive impact on British shipping.
"We think the increased competition is good news both for the shipping lines and for the end consumers," he said.
