Six-country rail scheme is on track

Railway authorities from six countries have backed a plan for a new freight service between Germany and China. China, Mongolia, Russia, Belarus, Poland and Germany have agreed to collaborate on customs and border patrols to simplify transit procedures and minimise the time needed for container trains to cross borders.

This will mean the overland trip from Hamburg to Beijing taking less than half the 40 days it takes by sea via the Indian Ocean which is 10,000 kilometres longer than the overland route.

Chairman of China Railway Container Transport, Zheng Mingli, said that barring complications, “a scheduled container train should be shuttling between China and Germany in a year’s time.”

Currently, countries along the corridor have different types of rail tracks and various customs and border checking regulations, which has hampered the route’s viability. It also costs more to carry goods by rail than by ship.

As a test cargo train left Beijing, Hartmut Mehdorn, CEO of German rail Deutsche Bahn, said the transport axis between Asia and Europe had never been more important in light of booming economic growth in Asia and Russia.

He added: “Deutsche Bahn has recognised the trend early. This will pay off in the long-term.”
