Mixed response as EC puts duties on shoe imports

The European Commission is to impose duties on shoes from China and Vietnam despite opposition from some member states.

The commission has decided to renew anti-dumping duties, due to expire this month, for five years.

Duties of ten per cent will be imposed on Vietnamese leather shoes while imports from China will be taxed at 16.5 per cent.

Under current measures Chinese shoes are subjected to a 19.4 per cent import duty and Vietnamese shoes 16.8 per cent.

A spokesman for the EU commissioner Peter Mandelson said: “The commission has fulfilled its obligations and has brought forward a sound proposal.”

EU member states were given a month to back the proposals before the temporary measures expired. If a decision is not taken, the current measures will not be replaced.

The proposals have met with a mixed response, with the protrude Nordic countries against punitive duties while those countries with shoes industries have called for tougher measures.
