Universities explore procurement lessons learned from private-sector companies to achieve high performance (University Procurement Viewpoint)
Universities and research institutions face many of the same challenges as private-sector companies when it comes to buying goods and services.
Although many private-sector companies have achieved leading procurement operations that can enable high performance, most higher-education institutions are still in the early stages of implementing advanced purchasing functions.
Accenture research reveals that universities with centrally led purchasing departments and strategic sourcing approaches are better positioned to meet quality, delivery and price objectives-which can ultimately put them on the path to high performance. In this point of view, Accenture authors Alexander Brown, Bernard Donachie and Glenn Hoskin demonstrate how universities and research institutions already have ample opportunity to improve their performance by reexamining their purchasing departments and implementing strategic sourcing initiatives.
