Size matters for procurement as times get tough

Small and medium-sized suppliers are missing out to larger rivals as procurement operations subscribe to the view that big is best, new research has found.
The BT and Cisco commissioned research, found that 42 per cent of senior executives would opt for a big company over a small and medium-sized enterprise (SME), as they look to maintain a competitive advantage.

Further bad news for smaller concerns came with the news that 40 per cent would be less likely to choose a smaller supplier in a recession.
However, 53 per cent of the 253 respondents involved in the study, said that they would expect a better overall service from SME's.

Just over a quarter of those questioned (26 per cent) claimed that they would prefer to work with a supplier that did everything in-house.

John Dunsmore, managing director of the British Chambers of Commerce, admitted that small businesses were facing a tough time as the global economic slowdown continues.
"Smaller businesses are often the ones that are the first to be squeezed when there is a cutback," he said.

"They don't get paid on time or the company might use someone else. Lots of procurement people think smaller companies are high maintenance."
