Walmart US chief to lead its global sourcing efforts

In an unexpected move, US retail giant Walmart has moved the president and CEO of its US operations, Eduardo Castro-Wright, into a new role where he will be responsible for global sourcing, as well as leading its online retail arm Global.com.

The move, which sees Bill Simon taking over as president and CEO of Walmart US, illustrates the company's commitment to online retailing and a resurgent attempt at dethroning Amazon.com as the world's number one online retailer. It also underlies the importance of global sourcing to Walmart's activities.

"As we continue to become a truly global company and address the business challenges of a rapidly changing world, it is clear that Global.com and global sourcing are critical to our future growth and success," said Walmart president and CEO Mike Duke. "We are fortunate to have someone as strategic and knowledgeable as Eduardo leading the teams to drive these initiatives forward at a faster pace."

Walmart's focus on leveraging its scale in global sourcing moved up a gear earlier this year when it announced several different projects to help reduce its cost of goods, accelerate speed to market and improve the quality of products.
