Flood of jobless procurement pros creates 'challenging' environment
Nicola Linkleter, executive director procurement at Badenoch & Clark notes that staff cutbacks during the recession has left the market with a surfeit of well qualified procurement professionals. This is leading to intense competition for procurement vacancies and potential retention problems for employers in the future if they hire over-qualified staff to fill vacant positions, she warns.
"The economic downturn has flooded the market with so many equally qualified applicants for each vacancy. Hiring managers are finding it challenging to pick the right candidate for their vacancy. Employers can create retention issues for themselves if they hire overly qualified and over experienced candidates," Linkleter said.
The best approach to solving the issues created by today's challenging market centres on creating matrices of all the attributes that a candidate should have, according to Linkleter: "Hiring managers are resolving these issues by compiling matrices of the precise skills and experience needed to ensure that candidates are neither under nor overly qualified for their role."
