Supplier’s memories fade as cash crisis mounts
Manufacturers and suppliers of memory chips are bracing themselves for a dramatic slowdown as oversupply and weak demand reek havoc.
According to a study by research firm iSuppli, suppliers of dynamic random access memory (DRAM), face an uncertain future, with the credit crunch expected to plunge many into the red.
In late September iSuppli changed its near-term market rating on the sector from “negative” to “neutral”, as cash management issues continue to dog some of the world’s biggest suppliers.
With the exception of Samsung Electronics, all major DRAM chip manufacturers are experiencing losses, iSuppli said.
"Amid weak market conditions and the credit crunch, cash management has become the most critical issue facing DRAM suppliers," Nam Kim, chief analyst at the company, said.
"This will have the impact of reduced capital expenditures among DRAM suppliers in early 2009.”
