Starbucks left high and dry courtesy of “bonkers” water policy
US coffee giant Starbucks has come under fire from environmental groups after it was found to be wasting as much as 23 million litres of water a day.
An investigation found that staff are told to leave taps running all day in an effort to prevent germs developing – a policy branded “nonsense” and “bonkers” by hygiene experts.
Starbucks say the “dipper well” - which staff are not permitted to turn off - is left on under “health and safety rules”.
The news is likely to come as a massive blow to a company that has made much of its environmental credentials.
"Leaving taps running all day is a shocking waste of precious water. And to claim you are doing it for health and safety reasons is bonkers,” said Peter Robinson, of environmental charity Waste Watch.
A spokesman for Starbucks said: “We recognise the opportunity exists to reduce our total water usage. Starbucks’ challenge is to balance water conservation with the need for customer safety.”
