Shortages come to the boil as Wal-Mart restricts rice purchases
Wal-Mart is to begin restricting sales of rice at one of its chains, as shortages of the staple food take hold.
Customers shopping at Sam’s Club, the company’s cash-and-carry division, will only be allowed to buy a maximum of four bags per visit as a result of the export curbs introduced in some of the world’s largest rice producing countries.
Wal-Mart said the restrictions were “due to recent supply and demand trends”, and follow price increases of 68 per cent in 2008.
The retail giant said it was working with its suppliers to address the problem.
