Panasonic calls on suppliers to help reduce its greenhouse gas emissions

Panasonic Corp is expected to enlist the help of suppliers in a forthcoming initiative to reduce the environmental impact of its operations.

The Japanese group will, according to local media reports, in April seek to boost ongoing attempts to cut greenhouse gas emissions from its operations by demanding that its suppliers – approximately 10000 companies – take steps to measure their own emissions.

Suppliers that are not found to be performing adequately will need to “adopt greener production methods if necessary”, according to the Japanese newspaper The Nikkei.

The report added that Panasonic is preparing to adopt the Scope 3 international accounting and reporting standard, which measures greenhouse gas emissions created by all corporate activities.

“Big foreign names, such as Wal-Mart Stores and Procter & Gamble, use the Scope 3 guidelines to seek suppliers that are more environmentally friendly. The guidelines, which are voluntary, cover not only emissions generated in production but also those produced in the process of outsourcing output and procuring raw materials,” The Nikkei reported.

“According to one estimate, Panasonic suppliers release about three times more emissions than its group firms. Though getting these companies to go green will take time and money, Panasonic believes the move will ultimately save it money by reducing electricity consumption, among other benefits.”
