Tradition runs deep at E&J Gallo Winery. The firm’s quest for excellence in wine making was started back in 1933 by brothers Ernest and Julio Gallo.
Originally grape growers, the brothers successfully responded to the repeal of America’s prohibition laws by turning to wine making. Today, E&J Gallo Winery is situated in Modesto, California, and is the world’s largest familyowned winery and the biggest exporter of Californian wine. The company enjoys a 25% share of the American wine market.
In the past seven years, business has doubled and the growth trend looks set to continue. Rob Donohoe, Vice President, Global Sourcing, has used membership with Procurement Leaders to help meet the challenges that have come with such success.
“A key role as procurement professionals is to make sure our suppliers can support our growth without making any compromises on quality and service,” says Rob. “Growth also raises the stakes associated with any supply disruption, so we need to ensure we have the very best risk management techniques in place.
“Procurement Leaders helps us meet these challenges by filtering down the very best ideas and practices that will drive us forward. They also help us to not just plan, but understand how to execute. The data and intelligence provided is second to none.”
As well as being a source of ideas and information, membership with Procurement Leaders provides Rob and his team the opportunity for direct communicationwith the most senior and prominent procurement executives from around the world.
“Nothing reinforces the knowledge I am gaining better than direct, face-toface communication with my peers,” explains Rob.
“Seeing the transformational activities my peers are working on motivates me and generates new ideas. Having access to my peer group across a broad range of industries and geographies challenges me to stay on top of my game.”
In 2014 E&J Gallo Winery entered and won the prestigious Procurement Leaders Corporate Social Responsibility Award.
“Winning such an accolade brought tremendous credibility to our team externally,” says Rob. “Internally it reaped rewards too. It showed that our procurement department was not just a purchasing organisation but a real business driver.”
The future is looking bright for E&J Gallo Winery and Procurement Leaders looks set to be there with them on their journey.
