Every day businesses are moving faster, getting closer to their customers and making connections. When I speak to my colleagues, I'm always impressed with how procurement is taking up that challenge. So when I have the opportunity to meet with some of the leading players in the procurement space, I want to know how they're adapting to this changing landscape and what ideas they have to transform procurement.
We are living in a time when you have to think about supporting the business in giving customers a more immediate and more personalised experience than ever before. When I think about procurement and supply chain dealing with the broader supply base, we have to keep this concept of connectivity with the customer in focus.
I think about the soda machines now give you whatever flavour you want at the point of sale. That's kind of how we have to think in procurement: how can we give customers more flexibility, reliability and immediacy. We have to build that in to our core competencies and connectivity.
The other thing that's changing every day and changing how we work everyday is data and analytics. We are becoming data scientists and what's really interesting is thinking about how we can use those capabilities to drill down and look at how that allows us to make decisions about our supply chains.
Incidentally, I don't think these are just consumer-facing business problems. These shifts are happening in all our lives and b2b needs to be agile and customer-centric as much as anyone.
I'm excited about what we as a profession are doing and I'm excited to have the chance to welcome some great speakers and some great guests to the World Procurement Congress.
As always, I'll be looking for 'what's next' and I'd challenge you to do the same. We know what the past looks like, what the immediate future is, but finding out what those game-changers are that will differentiate is what matters. And I find when I have the chance to meet with the quality of individuals at these events, there's always the chance to ask the question that might change everything.
