ISSUE 64 SEP/OCT 2016

Navigating uncertainty

Steve Hall, Editor

It’s rare to meet a CPO today who says they’re doing things the old-fashioned way and few roles are as broadly interpreted as that of the procurement chief.

But get ready for things to become a lot more confusing. Procurement has more control than it ever did before, more tools at its disposal, more insight into the supply market and a wider remit to tackle agendas beyond cost. While you’re preparing strategies, category plans, new targets and new ideas for next year, it’s likely that you’ll be staring at various reports and trying to figure out the implications of the US election for your outsourcing agreements or whether the recruitment market is likely to hamper your talent strategy. We may have more information and more capability, but it’s still a huge challenge to plan ahead in a world that is changing at a terrifying pace.

Anticipating change is the name of the game. Is there any other function that requires better vision and understanding of the changes shaping the world? Procurement teams have to understand the value chain like no one else and stay ahead of their suppliers and the emerging needs of their customers.

Thinking big will help CPOs live up to their superhero status, but so will making use of the community and the resources that they have only recently had at their disposal.
